About the Day

A Screening Without the Rules

We close the week with a relaxed screening of a family film. The lights stay up, the volume stays low, and nobody is asked to sit still or stay quiet. Children can watch from a beanbag, pace at the back, lie under a blanket, or drift in and out of the room entirely.

Ordinary cinemas are inaccessible to a lot of our families — not because of the film, but because of the darkness, the volume, and the unspoken expectation that a child sits silently for ninety minutes. Removing all three turns the same activity into something a family can actually share.

Friday is deliberately the calmest day of the week. After the animals, the costumes, the inflatables, and the magic, most children need a low-demand day, and this is it.

Skills We're Targeting

What This Builds

  • Shared enjoyment — being in a group, doing a pleasant thing, with no performance demand attached.
  • Emotion identification — technicians quietly narrate what characters are feeling and why, which is far easier to grasp on a screen than in real time.
  • Predicting and commenting — "what do you think happens next?" is one of the most natural conversation prompts there is.
  • Self-regulation and self-advocacy — noticing you need a break and taking one, without needing permission.
  • Sharing snacks — passing a bowl, offering to a peer, and waiting your turn at the popcorn table.
How the Day Runs

Friday's Schedule

9:00 – 10:15 a.m.
Arrival and regular 1-on-1 sessions. Children help set up the room — arranging cushions, dimming blinds, and choosing where they want to sit.
10:15 – 10:45 a.m.
Snack prep and a group vote between two pre-selected films, using picture cards. Practising accepting an outcome you didn't vote for is part of the activity.
10:45 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
The screening. One pause partway through for a stretch and a bathroom break. Children may come and go freely throughout.
12:30 – 1:15 p.m.
Lunch and a group chat about the film — favourite character, favourite moment, how someone felt and how you could tell.
1:15 – 3:00 p.m.
Week wrap-up, certificates for every child, regular afternoon programming, and pickup.
Included

What's Provided

  • The screening, with lights up, subtitles on, and volume kept low throughout.
  • Beanbags, floor cushions, blankets, and chairs — children choose.
  • Popcorn and a simple snack, with allergy-safe alternatives prepared separately.
  • A quiet activity table at the back for children who want the room but not the screen.
  • An end-of-week certificate for every child who took part.
Please Note

Before Friday

  • Confirm food allergies with us, even if they are already on file. Popcorn is being served and we would rather double-check.
  • Send a preferred snack if your child has a restricted diet or strong food preferences, and we will serve it alongside everyone else's.
  • A favourite blanket or cushion from home is very welcome and often makes the difference between watching and not watching.
  • Both film options are rated G and will be posted at the clinic on Thursday, so you can flag anything your child finds upsetting.

Closing Out the Week

Four high-stimulation days in a row is a lot, and it is completely normal for a child to arrive Friday with very little left in the tank. If your child has had a hard week, a short Friday is a perfectly good Friday — come for the film and go home after lunch. Their BCBA will share observations from the week at your next parent session, including anything worth carrying into their regular programming.
