About the Day

Come as Anyone You Like

Children arrive dressed as a favourite character — a superhero, a princess, a dinosaur, a train, a video game character, anything at all. Costume characters visit through the day, and the whole clinic leans into the theme.

This is the day of the week that does the most social work while feeling the least like work. A costume gives a child an obvious, low-pressure thing to talk about, and it gives peers an obvious thing to ask about. Children who rarely initiate a conversation will often walk straight up to someone and start one, because "you're Spider-Man" is a much easier opener than "hello."

Costumes are entirely optional. A themed t-shirt is a costume. So is nothing at all — plenty of children prefer to be the audience, and the day works just as well for them.

Skills We're Targeting

What This Builds

  • Initiating conversation — costumes hand children a ready-made opening line and a shared topic.
  • Greetings with unfamiliar people — a wave, a high five, or a quiet nod to a character, whichever a child can manage.
  • Pretend and symbolic play — taking on a role, staying in it, and building a scene with a peer.
  • Talking about a special interest reciprocally — sharing the floor, asking a question back, noticing when a listener has had enough.
  • Body awareness in costume — managing a mask, a cape, or gloves is real, practical adaptive work.
How the Day Runs

Tuesday's Schedule

Unlike the other days, Tuesday has no single main event. The theme runs right through, in short bursts.

9:00 – 9:30 a.m.
Arrival and a costume parade for anyone who wants to join. Children who prefer to watch have seats saved at the side.
9:30 – 11:00 a.m.
Regular 1-on-1 sessions, with therapy targets woven into the theme — character vocabulary, describing what someone is wearing, "who are you?" and "I am ___."
11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Costume character visits. Characters move between rooms rather than gathering everyone into one crowd, so children meet them in a familiar space in small groups.
12:00 – 1:00 p.m.
Lunch, then themed craft stations — mask making, cape decorating, and character drawing.
1:00 – 2:15 p.m.
Small-group pretend play, structured by a technician: a rescue mission, a tea party, a dinosaur dig. Turn-taking prompts built into every scene.
2:15 – 3:00 p.m.
Photos for consenting families, wind-down, and pickup.
Included

What's Provided

  • Costume character appearances throughout the morning.
  • All craft materials for mask making, cape decorating, and drawing.
  • Spare capes, masks, and simple dress-up pieces at the door for anyone who arrives without a costume and changes their mind.
  • A staffed quiet room, open all day.
  • Photos shared with families afterwards, where photo consent is on file.
Please Note

Before Tuesday

  • Pick the costume together, in advance. Let your child try it on at home first — a costume that turns out to be itchy at 9 a.m. can derail the morning.
  • Send a change of regular clothes. Many children want the costume off by lunchtime, and that is completely fine.
  • Skip full-face masks where you can. They restrict vision and get warm quickly. Face paint, hats, and headbands work better.
  • No toy weapons, please — including foam swords and blasters. A shield or a wand is perfect.
  • If costume characters frighten your child, tell us Monday. We will keep them in a separate space during visits and show them photos of the characters instead.
